Hillsborough County issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
Exercise is great for the body and mind and is particularly important as we age. The Tampa Bay Active Life Games, organized by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation, help promote physical and mental fitness through an Olympics-style competition that attracts hundreds of adults age 50 and older each year.
The competitions began in the early 1980s, and this year's Active Life Games continue the tradition of offering a variety of contests for all skill and fitness levels. Events range from track and field to bag toss to pickleball to billiards, dominoes, and horseshoes. Individual competitions are held at a variety of locations throughout Hillsborough County.
Registration is underway and continues through Sept. 24. Cost is $15 for one event or $25 for unlimited events. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes a cart. This year's Games will be held Oct. 4-12.
In addition to being fun and a great way to stay in shape, the Games serve as a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games.
The 2020 Active Life Games were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 Active Life Games will follow CDC and County safety protocols.
