Hillsborough Community College issued the following announcement on Jan. 18.
Calvin Reed and the Reed Family Foundation, in partnership with the Hillsborough Community College (HCC) Foundation, established The Allen, Hester and Newlin Endowed Scholarship for Welding and Fitting with a gift of $300,000. The fund was created to honor Hubert Allen, Wesley “Buddy” Hester and David Newlin, three respected and influential men in the welding field, commemorating their contributions to the industry and careers at Tampa Tank/Florida Structural Steel.
From the earnings of the fund, a scholarship will be awarded to two HCC students each year: one in the basic welding program and one in the new advanced welding program. These scholarships will fund both students’ entire course of study.
“Tampa Tank has played a vital role in the HCC welding program, which has successfully graduated 314 students since its inception,” HCC President Dr. Ken Atwater said. “We are grateful to the Reed family for their gift and support of these important programs that will benefit the next generation of pioneers.”
The endowment gift was announced at an event held at Tampa Tank’s Gibsonton facility on Dec. 15, 2021. In attendance were Dr. Ken Atwater, HCC president; Arthur “Chip” Diehl, HCC Board of Trustees Chair; Corey Yraguen, Tampa Tank CEO; Jason Bahamonde, Tampa Tank VP of Fabrication; Charles Holloman, HCC Foundation Board of Directors Chair; and Eric Bailey, HCC Foundation Board of Directors Vice Chair. HCC welding program students were also in attendance and took a facility tour before the event to see what Tampa Tank/Florida Structural Steel contributes to the industry and greater Tampa Bay area.
The mission of the HCC Foundation is to secure and steward philanthropic support to enhance the work of Hillsborough Community College and assure the success of its students. Through generous donor support, the HCC Foundation has awarded more than $10 million in scholarship assistance to more than 9,000 students since 2000.
