Our fourth summer of major referendum projects is underway at more than twenty of our schools, totaling approximately $110 million in renovations funded by the half-penny sales tax. These infrastructure advancements can only be spent on capital expenses, including repairs, maintenance, technology, and security. Each project, selected based on need, will provide students and staff with the best classrooms, hallways, common areas, and experiences to allow our students and educators to feel valued every day.
Yesterday, we saw the work happening in and outside of Martinez Middle School in Lutz. Crews are working on a partial air conditioning replacement, a fire alarm and evacuation improvements, gym floor repair, network infrastructure, and painting projects. The total community investment for the summer at this school alone is more than $6 million.
The passing of the education referendum has allowed us to complete 453 projects—an investment of more than $355 million.
“We require one bank account to handle all of the money. So we can tell you the first dollar that came in, the last dollar spent, and what it is used for. So Hillsborough County taxpayers can be at peace knowing that your money is being taken care of and looked after.” – Jose Valiente, CPA and member of the Citizen Oversight Committee.
Thanks to the support from our community, this referendum has allowed a new source of revenue to complete much-needed projects that may not have been tackled for years to come.
