Each month the Plant City Police Department takes dozens of reports for bicycle thefts. We would like to share some tips you can use to safeguard your bicycle from being stolen as well as steps you can take in the event it is stolen.
If you purchase a new bicycle, it will come with an owner’s manual which will have the make model and serial number already in the manual or it will have blank spaces where the owner can fill the information in. Be sure to secure the information with other documents for valuables.
If you have a used bicycle, you can locate the serial number to record it fairly easy. On most bicycles, it will be located beneath the bottom bracket of the frame. The bottom bracket is the round portion of the frame where the pedal cranks are located. If you turn the bicycle upside down this is the easiest way to locate it.
Be able to give an accurate description of the bicycle (BMX, Mountain, Beach Cruiser etc.,) and include the color(s) of the bike and any unique markings, decals or accessories.
Lastly if you leave your bike anywhere such as a store or a house you may be visiting remember IF YOU LIKE IT LOCK IT! Consider investing in a bike lock and chain that is long enough to secure your bicycle at a bike rack or something firmly anchored like a tree or a pole.
Bicycles always represent such easy targets as they can easily taken and rode away. These tips will make you less likely to become a victim.
