Hillsborough County issued the following announcement on July 15.
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation during its July 14 meeting declaring July 26 as Americans with Disabilities Act 31st Anniversary Awareness Day. The proclamation celebrates the 31st anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, key legislation that ensures people with disabilities have the same opportunities as those who don't have disabilities. The proclamation also recognizes the hard work and efforts by advocates, such as the Hillsborough County Alliance for Citizens with Disabilities, which has been steadfast in its mission to raise awareness about the importance of supporting equality and inclusion for people with disabilities.
The Board presented the proclamation to Justin Stark, co-chair of the Hillsborough County Alliance for Citizens with Disabilities. After accepting the recognition, Stark thanked the Board and said that the ADA has accomplished so much in providing access for people with disabilities.
"In 31 years, we've made a lot of progress, and … as a community and a country, I definitely want to see us continue to create that equal access, especially in those key areas: transportation, housing, employment, [and] recreation," he said. "Hillsborough County does a tremendous job [in] providing that for us, and we're very appreciative [for that]."
The Board also presented two additional proclamations declaring July 2021 as Independent Retailer Month and Parks and Recreation Month.
