Plant City Police Department issued the following announcement on July 15.
On July 13, the Planteen Recreation Center hosted the Kids & Cops Chili Cookoff!
The 10 to 13-year-old summer camp group challenged the Plant City Police Department to join them for this special event. We had 5 chili entrants - 1 from PCPD (cooked by Lieutenant Mike Ward), 2 prepared by the student campers, 1 made by the volunteer staff, and 1 presented by City staff.
Our judges were Mayor Rick Lott, Commissioner Mary Mathis and her husband Tony, Bill McDaniel, City Manager, and Police Chief James Bradford.
The vote ended up in a tie between the PCPD chili and the City staff chili. Plant City Parks & Recreation Director Jack Holland was drafted as the tie-breaking judge, and he selected PCPD Officer Mike Ward’s chili as the Grand Champion!
The celebration was also attended by 49 campers, a group of police officers, and some parents. The kids and parents were also given the opportunity to vote, and the volunteer staff's chili (presented as a chili dog) was selected as the Kids' Choice Winner!
Pelican's SnoBalls Plant City was onsite and all attendees were gifted the SnoBall of their choice! Some of the officers stayed behind to play pool and foosball with the Camper Chefs, and a great time was had by all!
